Today his successful designs are considered icons of modern design.
Marc Newson studied jewellery design and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts and, after graduating, won an Australian Crafts Council scholarship. He developed the futuristic couch 'Lockheed Lounge' for an exhibition at the Roslyn Oxley Galerie in Sydney which made him internationally famous. The core of this sculpture-like piece of furniture is made of fibre glass-reinforced polyester and is then clad in a skin of riveted aluminium sheeting.
After periods in Tokyo and Paris, Marc Newson has been living and working in London since 1997, when he also formed the Studio Marc Newson Ltd. Marc Newson is a guest lecturer in design at the College of the Arts in Sydney and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
The Australian designer is also known for his organically-shaped furniture. A famous example of Newson’s organic shapes is his 'Orgone Chair', which he developed in 1993. The original design came from a limited series of furniture made of aluminium. A mass-produced plastic variation followed after a short period.
Marc Newson designed the anthropomorphic shape 'Bucky' for the Fondation Cartier in Paris in 1995.
Marc Newson has been awarded many prizes, including the Designer of the Year Award, the prize of Royal Designer for Industry and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The famous Australian designer and entrepreneur received the Lucky Strike Designer Award in 2011.
His designs are on display in many museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris and the London Design Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
